Comparative Research on Reading - Charles A. Perfetti, Ph.D.

Comparative Research on Reading: Universals, writing system factors, learning to read in a new system Charles Perfetti.
In this talk I will highlight some of the findings from our research on comparative reading processes. These include:
  1. studies of reading across the high-contrast systems of alphabetic English and non-alphabetic Chinese that produce observations on reading’s universal and writing-system-specific aspects through behavioral, neuroimaging, and ERP methods;
  2. research on learning to read in a new writing system, also using multiple methods, with a special emphasis on handwriting as a way to build orthographic representations and
  3. general observations about languages and writing systems and how the two are related.
